The Marriage Game by Sara Desai

5.0

The Marriage Game by Sara Desai is the story of Layla Patel who has begrudgingly come back to her family in San Francisco after the life she tried to build in New York City. Trying to build from the bottom, Layla starts a business above her family's restaurant in the space her dad is letting her use. Unfortunately, her father rented the space to Sam Mehta. And created an online dating profile which Layla learns about when the bachelors come strolling in.

Sam likes structure and Layla likes chaos; it's no wonder they start to clash. They decide to play a game to see who will win the rights to the office. For Layla to win, she must marry one of the ten bachelors her father picked. As Layla and Sam interview the bachelors, sparks continue to fly. Will Layla end up with a bachelor from the list or someone else?

This was Desai's first book and while you don't need to read this one before The Dating Plan, The Marriage Game gives some more context and character to some of the characters in Desai's second book. Desai has wonderful prose that takes the classic romantic comedy genre for a spin while allowing the reader to be immersed in Indian culture.
