Childhood's End
by Arthur C. Clarke
If readers judge the past by the standards of the present, there are going to be some incongruous moments. For example, this author makes some questionable choices in character description. But overall this short work is outstanding. The start is impeccable and the ending lingers in one's thoughts, days after finishing.
