Holy shit.
I’m a long time AJW fan & when he announced his adult debut, I was like “if his YA is as intense as it is, I can’t imagine how his adult work will be” and let me tell you! It is BALLS TO THE WALLS. This is one of the first horror novels that I’ve been genuinely disturbed by. The energy is similar to his YA books, in that we get to experience the injustice of the trans experience and the autistic experience up close and personal and in exquisite detail - and similarly to his YA novels, the true horror comes from the reality of it all.
It is upsetting because it is real - whether you add a worm cult or not, there are people forced to continue pregnancies whether they want them or not. There are people who claim to be operating for the greater good who would force people to carry babies to term. It’s horrifying in the book and it’s horrifying in real life.
AJW is fucking brilliant, he really really is. This books is gnarly and it is not for the faint of heart. It is devastating and upsetting from start to finish.
