A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught

4.0

I can’t say medieval historical romance is my favorite sub-genre with its jousting, jesters, serfdom, and fashion, but I did ultimately enjoy this. There was some miscommunication trope plot points in this book, which like many people isn’t my favorite, but it wasn’t the major driving force and was basically resolved by talking it out—crazy. It is still something I generally don’t love to read though. I think you also have to go into this knowing it was written in the late 80s. I think some things would have been handled slightly differently if it was written today, though I did expect it to be worse. For example, there were certain points farther into the book where the author could have been justified in making our romantic hero mean and vengeful to our heroine, but instead showed restraint and kept him a relative gentleman, which I appreciated.
