The Apprentice
by Tess Gerritsen
I’ve read the Rizzoli and Isles series all out of order. Case in point, I just finished book #2 well after some of the later ones and boy is there a difference. It’s less of a Rizzoli/Isle’s soap opera for one and Gerritsen’s medical background really shows through. I liked this a lot better than some of the older ones, though there really isn’t a friendship between the two women at this point. They’re just people who meet in the morgue.
It’s the summer after The Surgeon had his way with Rizzoli nearly killing her before she managed to capture him. It’s just as hot now as it was then and now there is a new killer on the loose in Boston, a man who likes to subdue the husband, truss him up and make him watch the rape of his wife. He then kills the husband and makes off with the wife killing her some time later. To make things worse, he’s a necrophiliac. Everyone but Rizzoli notices that she’s having issues with this case due to the similarities in style to the Surgeon.
To be fair, Rizzoli notices her issues but doesn’t dare let on to the others. She is suffering like most victims of a violent crime. To make matters worse, an FBI agent Gabriel Dean is on the scene for reasons that no one, not even her boss, knows other than they are to cooperate fully. He obviously knows more than he’s telling and there are some suggestions he might even be the Dominator as they’re calling him (though of course I know Dean from later books, the perils of reading out of order).
Then her worst nightmare comes true. The Surgeon escapes and now she has two psychos to capture. The ending was sadly too Hollywood and predictable for me (costing this one star) but at least it didn’t drag on too long. Overall, an enjoyable read.
