Moominvalley in November
by Tove Jansson
So often in life we think that some people hold the answers to our problems. We make these people our idols and assign them with qualities that go beyond reality. And when they can’t help us, or they lack the answers that we seek, we are incredibly disappointed. After that we can either fall to pieces or we find the best answers that we can on our own.
Tove Jansson is one of my favorite authors and one of many reasons is because she has the ability to capture some of humanity’s most complex emotions in a simple and descriptive way.
This novel is about a bunch of characters that think that the moomin family holds the solution to their problems. Be it existential anxiety or boredom. They show up at the moomin house and find it empty. Because of this they are forced to face their problems on their own or with people they didn’t expect creating conflict, disaster and a lot of unexpected growth.
The last moomin book features none of the members of the moomin family. But because of it’s clever themes and incredibly powerful message it remains my favorite of the whole series.
