This book is very slow, very much the introduction to the rest of the volumes. The first half was a bit slow and introduced Xie Lian as a character as well as the Xianxia setting. I read SVSSS before this and I missed the banter from SQQ compared to Xie Lian's narration, but the humor in the writing still comes through occasionally. The second half I could feel the tension between the two male leads occasionally, which sustained me and motivated me to pick up the second volume. That being said it took me ages to get through this first volume despite the many recommendations. I think there's a lot more plot and world building especially compared to SVSSS which I found an easier read.
