A Far Wilder Magic
by Allison Saft
In the Welty manor, Margaret spends her days awaiting her alchemist mother's return. But things change when Wes, an aspiring alchemist, comes at her doorstep in hopes of seeking apprenticeship with her mother. Together, in hopes of salvaging their crumbling lives and sinking dreams, they decide to enter the Halfmoon hunt, in order to kill the legendary mythical creature, known as the Hala.
I was swept away this urban fantasy set in 1920s inspired world rich with mythology, magic, and alchemy. Both Margaret and Wes are well rounded characters who have been shaped by their own dreams and ghosts. They story is character driven and has a lot of layers embedded in it. From the exploration of religious and political conflict to the family dynamic, everything has been woven together without it feeling forced. The way the relationship develops between Wes and Margaret was so heartwarming and wholesome.
The only thing that I did not liked was the hunt. The story builds around the hunt as the main event but it is rushed over and is over quickly. I wished there was more to it, the tension and the competition felt lacking. It was a little anti climatic. Despite this, I had a great time reading the book.
