I started out really enjoying this but unfortunately my interest withered as it went on. The dialogue seemed extremely forced and as if it was fitting a narrative. Harper is definitely brilliant, but the storytelling just wasn’t there. The patient stories were gripping at points, however I was finding myself skimming the lesson that was learned (it seemed every lesson was the same). There were some stories that were much stronger than others. It was incredible to read about how she stood up for herself and the Black man who was being forced to get X-rays against his own will by two White cops. However, she flipped back with personal and medical stories and in my opinion, didn’t tell either with enough detail.
