Something Blue by Emily Giffin
3.0

Something Blue is the sequel to Emily Giffin's Something Borrowed. Last time we got to see things from "mousy" best friend Rachel's perspective. This time around we get to see things from self-centered best friend, Darcy's point of view.

To recap, when we last left our cast of characters, Rachel had won the heart of Dex, her old friend but Darcy's fiance. Darcy was livid at the betrayal of Rachel and Dex canoodling behind her back, however Darcy herself had done her fair share of canoodling- with a groomsman of Dex's as well as a potential beau of Rachel's. In fact, not only did Darcy's actions leave her part Dexless, it also left her pregnant.

Fed up and confused with the cards Darcy has been dealt, she decides to flee indefinitely, to somewhat impartial yet mutual friend, Ethan. At first she decided she just needs a get away to make right the wrongs done to her. In time, however, she realizes wrong doing and making amends is a two-way street.

Something Blue unlike Something Borrowed definitely had more depth. In Something Blue Darcy's character finally gets the chance to redeem herself. Absent, for the most part, are Dex and Rachel. Instead the focus is on Darcy and her relationship with herself and her best friend, Ethan. It is Ethan who, in my opinion, delivers the best scene in the novel- a speech that prompts Darcy to wake up to who she has been and who she wants to be. The catalyst to change overnight seems a bit far-fetched, but redemption was necessary in order to make Darcy dimensional, as well as to root for her in the process.

As often happens with chick lit things get wrapped away tidily in the end (perhaps a bit too tidily). But I'm glad I read both novels so I could see how the entire cast of characters evolved.
