The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O'Neill

4.0

This book sat on my to-read list for a long time even though the cover pulled me right in. The story had me feeling so many emotions. The writing Is so beautiful, the depression-era Montreal history is fascinating, the subject difficult to deal with at times (orphans, prostitution, abuse, drug addiction) The tension between Rose & Pierrot as star-crossed lovers is both beautiful and tragic. I loved the way the theatre & performance wound throughout the book and the theme of the moon & stars was magical. The book had a different ending than how I expected it to end, and maybe it’s thrown me a bit. Overall I loved the story.
