Neal Stephenson is ridiculous. RIDICULOUS. His books never go the direction that I expect them to - but they never rely on that big-deal two sentence 'twist' in the last quarter of the book that completely changes them, they just build themselves up in incredibly unexpected ways. And did I mention that he is practically a word wizard? He writes magical sentences. Oh, and also he is a genius.
