Mother of Death and Dawn
by Carissa Broadbent
This final installment wrapped up the War of Lost Hearts trilogy with some strong emotional threads and meaningful character arcs, but overall it struggled to hold my full attention. The pacing dragged in several places, especially during the long stretches of reflection or buildup, which made it hard to stay invested. While the world and themes had potential, I’ve grown a bit tired of the war-driven romantasy trope — it’s starting to feel formulaic rather than fresh.
Aefa’s arc was the standout for me across the series, but I never truly connected with Max as a lead, which dulled the emotional weight of some key moments. The series had moments of intrigue and tension, but they were often buried under slower storytelling. I’m glad to have finished the series, but I don’t see it being one I return to or strongly recommend.
