Recitatif by Toni Morrison

5.0

Toni Morrison, you clever ass woman.

I read this ambiguous short story, Recitatif, three times to focus on the tale itself then the symbolism throughout to figure out who was white and who was Black, like the characters themselves when the situation with Maggie is unveiled. We're focused on who is what based on stereotypes we associate with one versus the other when the character of the characters, their backstory as it relates to their moms, and class is the ultimate focus and all we have to go on. Clever. This is written masterfully like only a genius could pen.
