The Night by Rodrigo Blanco Calderón

Strange story set among turbulent years in Venezuela. I had to look up names of characters to see who were real writers - I admit to knowing very little about South American literature apart from Isabel Allende and GG Marquez. Seemingly unrelated chapters peppered with wordplay, artists, violence, political chaos and bits of psychiatry just about kept me interested enough to finish.
