In one night, Laia has lost everyone that she loves. The empire suspected her older brother of working with the resistance and has sent “the mask” to take care of him. Laia’s grandparents are murdered and her brother is taken prisoner. Laia narrowly escapes and knows that the only way to save her brother is to find the resistance.
Elias is struggling with his identity and conscience. The son of the ruthless commandant, he knows that he will be forced to commit mass destruction. Knowing that is not the life for him, he plans to flee. When the augers catch wind however, he knows that he must stay in Blackcliff to protect the ones that he loves.
After finding the resistance, Laia is sent into Blackliff as a spy and will serve as a slave under the commandant. The treatment is harsh but Laia is determined to get information back to the resistance to save her brother!
There is a little love triangle in this first installment that adds some intrigue in the midst of violence. Proceed with caution with this title, there are quite a few trigger warnings. All-in-all, I will be picking up book two eventually!
