Cloud Atlas
by David Mitchell
This is probably the most complicated and arch book I have ever enjoyed. It's very hard to pull off. A modernist writing experiment of six intertwined stories, each in a different style, but all with tongue extended far in the cheek the way that only a British writer can achieve. The intertwined form is self-referentially performed by one of the characters in the book, where stories are replaced by musical instruments: "Overlapping soloists: ... each in its own language of key, scale and colour. In the first set, each solo is interrupted by its successor: in the second, each interruption is recontinued, in order." The character wonders if it is "revolutionary or gimmicky?" I would say yes to both, but it was still lots of fun.
