Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela by Nelson Mandela
3.5
Chronocling Nelson Mandela's full life, from the complex political structure he was born into, to his marriages, education, activisim, and years spent in jail. Parts of the book felt overly detailed (his childhood and love affairs for instance). There were a lot of different people to keep track of and maybe because I was listening to it rather than reading this made it hard to fully grasp the situation at times. The book had two big highlights for me. The first being his involvement in the struggle, his gradual radicalization, his political theory, his militarism, and what he learned about organizing an underground organization. That was all brilliant. I also loved the part in jail, especially his description about the brotherhood that existed between him and the other political prisoners. But there were a lot of other details that stuck with me. His gardening, his walk to the quarry and all the ingenious ways they found the sneak in contraband newspapers and notes. Other parts were a bit... long...
