How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell

informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

5.0

This book is incredible and so necessary. It is not an actual how-to book, but a philosophical and critical look at how the 'attention economy' (largely social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) is a problem interwoven with a lack of physical space and time, and compounded by issues of racial injustice, income inequality, and the environment.

Jenny Odell discusses how we as individuals and collective groups can start redirecting our attention as a form of resistance—not leaving technology or society altogether, but participating in ways that are more thoughtful, healthier for us, and less lucrative for the companies that profit off of our endless scrolling.

This was a great choice to read at the end of December, as it has inspired a change in my thinking and behavior going into the new year, and it will be something I reference and re-read in the future for sure.
