Still Star-Crossed
by Melinda Taub
It's been so long since I'd read a romance that made my heart flutter and made me keep reading with a certain desperate hunger, so Still Star-Crossed was very well received!
Initially, I must admit (as my updates indicate) that I was less than impressed with the book, having watched the first episode of the show beforehand (on a whim and without knowing it was a book, I might add) and having just come off reading The Handmaid's Tale (which is certainly written differently, if not "better"). But one of the many wonderful things about books is that they can be devoured (hunger metaphor again) as fast as the reader can read them--no waiting for the next episode (unless there's a sequel, which thankfully, there is none in this case). So I absolutely engulfed myself in Taub's take on Shakespeare's Verona within the past few days, only tearing myself away when I absolutely had to because my train had reached its destination. I thoroughly began to enjoy the book once I arrived to parts 2 and 3, and my shipper heart really began to soar. I can't believe I had seemingly forgotten how happy romance novels make me <3
Side note: I will say that I truly love the show's racial diversity, so as I was reading, I pictured the book's characters as the show's cast. I'm glad the show has stayed more or less true to the book so far (only 2 episodes have been released as of today) and I can only hope they don't try to drag the show on beyond what the book contains. So far, there are 7 episodes scheduled to be released and 6 parts to the book (with the 2 episodes that have aired corresponding to the first 2 parts of the book), so hopefully ABC will leave the show as a mini-series of sorts!
