I first visited the Gettysburg battlefield years ago. I knew very little about the battle before I went, but there was a haunting sadness about the place that settled into me. Michael Shaara's Pulitzer-prize winning novel recounts the Battle of Gettysburg from the perspective of officers on both sides, bringing them brilliantly and hauntingly alive. An excellent book, though at times I found it hard to read, because of the waste and tragedy and carnage of that battle, of that war, of all war.
