The final book in the Shades of Magic trilogy finishes out the story nicely... eventually. Approximately the first third is a sort of survival horror play that follows from the cliffhanger at the end of the second book, and I was seriously bored by the time the book stopped describing how terrible it all was and moved on to doing something about it. Once that happens, events go back to moving with reasonable speed and I enjoyed the remainder of the book. There's quite a bit going on, to the point where I felt some things could have used some more depth...the political intrigue between the three nations, for instance, which was throughout the trilogy was secondary to the personal stories right up until it takes center stage. But overall it's a good story that most fans of moderately-dark fantasy should enjoy.
