Moth Smoke
by Mohsin Hamid
I started reading it because I was curious to read about contemporary Pakistan. Of course, the book turns dark really soon. But I like all the themes it explores - all the dark sides of human beings that really just stem from desperation and desire. The social commentary, the job hunt scenario - where unless you have a foreign degree or connections it's hard to get a good job in a good company - I think that's so true for a lot of the Asian countries. There are so many brilliant parallels drawn that I know I haven't even fully understood - but the name of the characters + their fate (loosely) based on Aurangzeb and his brothers, the title and moth's love for fire that leads to its demise, etc.
