The Cider House Rules by John Irving

5.0

This one has been on my list for a long time. An absolute incredible read. I love John Irving’s brain. Everything from the sing-songy names, the crass nature of the orphans, and the way hating someone for a long time is oh so close to loving them. I think Irving writes the ugly stuff so well. By taking Homer Wells by the hand and teaching him the medical processes for an abortion the reader learns too. This book is ahead of its time. In a world where Roe V. Wade has been overturned this book feels more important than ever. It’s poignant message of how abortion care is all about access and choice was beautiful and timeless. Irving thank you for writing so honestly and matter-of-factly about sex.
