Every book Annie Rains writes is a work of art, and if you haven't picked up a book in the series yet, this might be a great place to start! A tale of second chance romance is exactly what this world needs right now, when we may feel all is lost and there's no going back to getting what we had before. I'm not always a fan of these due to the general angst involved, but Annie Rains did an amazing job telling the story with believable characters and a compelling backstory to make us all end up in tears at the end of the book. If you're on the fence about love when you start the book, you'll believe in love again by the end.
Sophie Daniels is in a rush to get to a friend's wedding when a dog runs into the road right in front of her car. Not knowing how badly he is injured, Sophie can only think of one person to take him to and it's the one person she least wants to see - Chase Lewis. Chase used to be her boyfriend, before a bad fall while climbing resulted in her leg being crushed and her plans for college being put on the backburner. In an effort to protect him from dealing with her suddenly stilted future, she pushed him away, and now that he's returned, it's painful to see him at all. Chase never forgot about Sophie, and when she asks him to care for the dog, he immediately wants to help. As the dog is healing and they spend more time together, they realize their feelings for each other never truly went away. But their past is full of pain and hurt feelings, and even love may not be enough to mend the wounds.
It was so easy to fall in love with this couple! From the first time the reader meets each of them, they immediately feel relatable and warm. Sophie was a sweetheart, with a kind soul but wounded spirit, and as soon as I realized she had lost her true love long ago, I immediately wanted her to get it back. Chase was an easy guy to like, with his veterinary practice and obvious care for animals, as well as his genuine affection for Sophie, in spite of all that happened between them. He had his own problems on the side, with a brother in jail and a nephew looking to him as a role model, and I could feel the pressure that was put on him. He needed Sophie, and Sophie needed him, they just both weren't sure of that right away. It was a slow burn romance at first, as they were hesitant to start anything, but it became clear quickly that one kiss would not be enough. I was rooting for them the whole way, and the book ended perfectly, exactly how I would have liked it to end. There were some bumps in the road getting there, but that was necessary for them both to heal enough to see their love for each other.
