In the Miso Soup
by Ryū Murakami
I follow a horror reviewer who said that he was disgusted by this book. He was right. I regret reading this.
That's not to say that it is a bad book. It's translated but, as far as I can tell, well written. The dialogue is captivating and the characters are believable. There is just one scene that ruins it all for me. I honestly think I was in shock whilst I was reading it.
I was going to say that I can't put my finger on why it disturbed me so much, but it doesn't really matter. Trigger warnings for burning flesh, sexual assault, mutilation and murder.
Aside from that, the book does its job. I was in suspense for a long time before the 'grand reveal'. The main character did not have the best moral compass (he had an underage girlfriend who seemed to cook and clean for him whilst being in his twenties), but there were times where you could feel sympathetic for him.
I read this book in one night. I liked reading it but hated the book.
