3 stars feels too high but 2 stars feels too low!! I think Sarah Hogle’s books are just not for me. This one gave me too much secondhand embarrassment and I was NOT attracted to the LI at all. Also all the side characters feel like awful people!! Like her other book, I had to do a huge amount of suspending my disbelief and idk normally I can deal (I mean I love fantasy after all) but it just doesn’t land well with Hogle’s books. I wish I could tell you what it is about her books that I don’t vibe with but this one had me ping-ponging between cringe and boredom and her debut did not really do it for me either. This is clearly an unpopular opinion but honestly that doesn’t surprise cuz if anyone is gonna dislike something wildly popular and beloved it would probably be me 😵‍💫
