A High Wind in Jamaica by Richard Hughes

4.0

“There was once a girl called Emily, who slept with an alligator…”

Oh, this book… what a glorious embark! I must admit, I should have picked this one up about a month ago when it could have been enjoyed in all of its splendor; on the balcony of a cruise ship, the pure blue Atlantic bobbing lazily around me. But, I loved it all the same.
Richard Hughes has this way of writing that is poetic, mystic, yet so accessible and quick. This novel could have easily been 500+ pages, but he weaves this story in under 300 absolutely seamlessly.
An adventure story about the innocence-or lack thereof- of children. Emily is such a character! I love her so much.
Piracy, fantastic beasts, death, delusional adults. Do yourself a favor and read this. Yes, Hughes is a product of his time and some verbiage may offend some… get over it. A masterpiece, truly.
