Read if you like: Frankenstein retellings with their own twists, light western horror, short reads with a punch, detrimentally stubborn FMC
This is my first introduction to the author, but Tachyon Publications is something I'm very familiar with and so, even though I still have never finished Mary Shelley's novel, I was ready to dive in.
There are some retellings where being a fan of the source material works in its favor, but in this case The Unkillable Frank Lightning is really it's own thing. Catherine is not some power-mad person who finds out she can so she does, damn the outcome. Instead, she is a woman who has lived her life and found her power by breaking the box of what a female should be, and using that power to try to deal with her grief when her love is tested.
Yes this is a horror story, but it's also a love story. A story of grief and figuring out how to move on when your grief takes a twisted turn.
