Huck’s story is one of adventure- James’ is one of survival. I was riveted, and horrified, the entire time. This story should be taught as a tandem read to the adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It was gritty and powerful and the fact that many of the themes in the novel were new to me shows how deeply flawed our education system is.
