rambling and disappointingly lacking in impact in parts. having read solnit's wanderlust so recently a lot of the material covered here isn't new to me and is handled better by solnit. the more autobiographical sections and the biographies of the philosophers profiled here were the most effective parts for me - the rest of the book was pleasant enough to read but left not much of an impression.
