The Diviners by Libba Bray

5.0

Without reservation this ranks as one of my favorite YA novels--or novels period--that I have read in recent years. There was so much to delight in on every page of this novel, from the quirks of 1920s slang, the care taken in the depth and development of each character, the horrifying mystery at the heart of the plot, the slow intertwining of plot elements, and the page-turning terror of the last few chapters, The Diviners had me in its grip from the very first page.

By turns funny, sad, smart, devious, mysterious, disturbing, fascinating, and sassy, Bray's writing was consistently breathtaking. I cannot wait to discover what this brilliant author has in store next for her characters and their myriad of strange talents and gifts. Definitely a must read for anyone who enjoys a novel rooted in history and sprinkled with elements of the fantastical.
