"We are but fevered stars,... Here a little while, bright with promise, before we burn away."
 - The Obregi Book of Flowers

Magic, betrayal, violence, gods walking among us, political scheming, and lonely souls search for love.

I get so nervous starting secondbooks on a series, praying it doesn't suffer from the dreaded "middle book syndrome!", and while the pacing in this one is not as strong the first book, filling its role to "lay the groundwork" for an epic end in the final book of this trilogy, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK.

Rebecca Roanhorse is an absolute artist with her storytelling. She has created an epic fantasy world that pulls you in, with beautifully diverse characters, who are flawlessly flawed.
Xiala has to be my favorite character of all time. She is brave, stubborn, powerful, and we are starting to get more of her backstory showing us all she has overcome. And I am really starting to like Naranpa, she is ambitious, smart, brave, and has such a pure heart. I was least interested in her POV in Black Sun, but after Xiala, she was my 2nd favorite this time. Iktan is also growing on me as a love to hate xem. Xe are cunning, smart, strong, and badass. Roanhorse's seemless use of neopronouns is truly a gamechanger for language, literature, and expanding representation in a way that feels incredibly natural (speaking of my own ignorance of never having heard neopronouns before Black Sun).

*Please correct me if I have used the pronouns above in the wrong context. I tried to search and am learning. Thx!

In a time that adult and NA Fantasy is consumed with Fae and Witches etc, Roanhorse forged a path of her own staying true to Pre-Columbian America's inspired world.

Even though I will be impatiently waiting at least a year for the final book, this one has a definitive ending. Everyone in their place! All set to go and crush me when the story of Nara, Serapio, Xiala and Okoa collide.
Quite honestly? The wait just might kill me!
This is probably one of the best fantasy books that I've read.
