The Queen of the Tearling
by Erika Johansen
I had a lot of problems while reading this book. I kept falling asleep when I tried to read it. It started out good, then everything went downhill. I liked the idea of future being like middle ages. People forgot a lot of things from the past, books are rare but somehow they still know about genetics, recessive genes and plastic surgery. It's slower paced, and I don't mind that, but maybe it would have helped if it was a bit faster since the characters are so unlikeable, especially the main character Kelsea. The biggest reason I gave this book two stars is her. She is nineteen years old and I get that girls have a lot of insecurities with how they look, but Kelsea is just annoying. She is sooo convinced that she is ugly. There were some parts where I was WTF??? NO spoilers ahead. In this one part she is talking to this two generals and when they finish the generals stand up and wait for her to dismiss them. And she is sitting there, thinking why are they looking at her, is there something wrong with how she looks. Omg, girl... Another part that anoyed me so much that I wanted to punch Kelsea is where she came to the realization that there is something worse then being ugly, and that is being ugly but thinking you are beautiful... I read that part a few times because I was not sure if that was really what I read. People can't be confindent? And who determins what is beutiful or ugly? I'm gonna stop here with the review. I'm getting more and more pissed off and if I keep writing it, I might end up giving it one star.
