This dark urban fantasy hooks you with its complex characters and serious themes like addiction and manipulation. Faulkner skilfully balances Laurence’s inner struggles with his relationships, making everything feel real.
Laurence’s journey into growing and learning more about himself and his connection to the eerie Jack are fascinating, and his mom adds a nice touch of warmth. However, Quentin, while interesting, feels less engaging.
The setting isn’t very memorable, but the emotional depth and chilling moments are striking, similar to The Magicians.
Overall, this first book is a strong start to the series, and I can’t wait to read the next one!
