I highly recommend this chaste historic Christian women's literature novel to readers who enjoy complex, layered plots with deeply flawed characters who grow spiritually as they fight for their dreams while fighting each other in an enemies to lovers slow burn romance.

Both characters were given complicated backstories that molded them in a way that they each ended up appreciating the hardship in their lives. Their romance is beautiful and poignant, even when they choose to leave conversations unspoken for the good of the other person.

While this served as a series ender, each book is written to stand alone. There were cameos from the previous books, but they weren't integral to the plot and sometimes even served as a detraction and distraction.

My only gripe with the story is that the irrelevant plotline surrounding Billy should have been cut, as it served no purpose.

The ending does not tie everything up in a neat little bow, but leaves the audience wanting another book while simultaneously feeling satisfied. The author is content to leave some things unknown, deciding that the characters can be content knowing that some things God just allows and also having established that the highlanders have their own viewpoints on loyalty, justice, and outsiders. Finally, the world continues to be unjust and biased and families continue to be imperfect and fractured.
