A Promise of Peridot
by Kate Golden
Talk about character development. oowee.
Every character had a development arc.
The pieces of this story just fall right into place. I’m impatient, so I love when there is a problem then a resolution then another problem so on so forth. I really appreciate solving one issue at a time.
Arwen’s growth throughout this book was amazing. Her internal monologue was sometimes frustrating, but it made sense. Her world was turned upside down and she was bound for death, but I felt what she felt. How does one approach life knowing the time they’re supposed to die?? There’s no right answer to that and Kate Golden did a really good job working through that.
The side character relationships were also a plus in this. Ryder being Ryder. Mari and Griffin with the side banter. I almost want their POVs of this entire journey just so I can know what happened when Mari and Griffin went on their walk and lil side quest….
The slow burn lasted longer than a 3 wick candle. And I respect Kane, so much for giving Arwen time, space, and respect to not use and abuse her emotions. The power of a man that can wait was amazing.
Now - the spice was a little cringey. Fedrik felt unnecessary but also did help Arwen in her self-discovery and figuring how to live life when you’re destined to die a martyr. The beginning was great. The middle gripping. 3/4 through - mid and slow. The ending - shocking (so we’re just gonna end both the first and second book with a betryal? Cool.) My only other issue with this story is the lack of uniqueness and how much of a romantasy it’s trying to be. Like why does the Kane need to be both fae and dragon shifter? I just feel like we could have picked one. Also I wanted to know more of the lore beyond the magic systems, like why are there humans, fae, and witches??
This is definitely for you if you need a quick, addictive, romantasy read that requires little brain power and offers lots of fun!!
