Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

1.0

This is the worst review I've ever given to a book. When I first started reading it, I thought it'd be just another cheesy teen romance, but NO. This was painful to read and that's why it took me this long to finsh.

It was way worse than that. RR did an awful job into portraying an Asian American. This book is filled with stereotypical descriptions of each and every person of color. Before I get into this rant, I wanted to say that I'm not Asian, so I'll gladly take any correction or criticism on my review :)

First of all, Eleanor's two best friends (Beebi and DeNice) only appear the few times it's convenient for Eleanor or when they need someone to be sassy and somewhat threatening. A completely digusting, stereotypical and inaccurate description of black teens.

And the way Eleanor referred Park in the first few chapters or all the racist bullcrap that got out of her mouth, were just shocking.

Also, why is Park called Park, when his brother's name is literally JOSH??! And Park's mom portrayal? Why, even after living YEARS and years in an all-white neighborhood and being married to an American man, does she still have a strong accent? I know it's hard to lose it but, this was just so prominent that it became annoying.

I have more thoughts about this but I'm tired of white authors inaccurately portraying poc and getting away with it. Do better.
