Ink Exchange
by Melissa Marr
I badly want to love these books. I'm enchanted with the richness of the overlapping worlds. I enjoy the idea these books are based upon.
However, I felt let down after each book in this series. Perhaps it's the imaginative description of the surroundings, whether luxurious and vibrant, or dark and depressed, that leaves all the characters seeming so empty. Leslie, at least, has more personality than Ash, but there's still little to make her interesting as a character. I don't feel I can relate, nor do I want to, to any character at all. They all feel stunted, one-dimensional and emotionless, which is funny since this book is all about emotion.
I kept comparing the similarities between this and Wicked Lovely. Very similar stories in that the scared girl encounters the faerie world, is pursued by a regent but is in love with another guy. Even the different endings are similar. It's like the second-try of the first book.
I'm left wondering if Ms. Marr is just too nice? Dreamy, romantic and completely sweet? Her "bad" characters, the ones who are explored, are never really bad. The worst characters in this particular book are completely overlooked and the reader just has to know they're awful, horrible people...so awful, in fact, they can't even be looked-at.
I'll keep reading Marr's books because I really do enjoy the environment and I will continue to hope the characters progress and eventually become solid.
