Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells

This was a quick read and I enjoyed well enough, though I think it took a step backwards compared to the preceding books in the series. All of the Murderbot stories contain an element of mystery, but I think the mystery in the story was this one’s biggest selling point—as Murderbot tries to figure out the saboteur on one of his side quests while also deflecting the suspicions of the humans he’s accompanying.
What I found lacking in this episode was any substantial amount of character development in Murderbot. Sure, he has his trademark sarcasm and acerbic wit—and he is increasingly more comfortable expressing those attributes to those around him. However, there’s something missing in his tumultuous introspection—that sort of tug-of-war between wanting to embrace his humanity and not wanting to admit it.
Still, it’s definitely worth reading. Like I said, it’s a quick read and a fun mystery. And, at the time I’m writing this, I still have one more novel to get to that is currently out, so I’m trusting it’s worth it to continue in the series.
