The Dance Tree by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
4.0

This book was beautifully written. It reminded me of two novels: The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell and The Miniaturist, by Jessie Burton. Anyone who enjoyed one or either of these, as well as Hargrave’s other novel, The Mercies, will most likely appreciate this one.

There was a haunting tone at times and beautiful turns of phrase(s). The characters were well rounded and distinct. The story itself, from structure to plot, were intriguing and mildly disturbing.

This is not a fast paced novel, but the stakes felt high and I only wanted the best for (most) of the characters. The ending feels well earned, though it is terribly bittersweet.

I do think I prefer The Mercies, but I think the setting was more of a character itself in that one—which is something I adore/d.
