It already had so many problems and a creepy premise, but when Clare's friend said she would've been so excited and down for hearing that Clare was "the Lolita to his Humbert Humbert"... I had to bounce. Even 2003 wasn't so long ago that we didn't know that Lolita was a novel of abuse, not of love.
