Monster by Frank E. Peretti
2.0

Man, if you don't know Peretti, this book must have been such a bait and switch. For about the first half, it's a super campy Bigfoot story with a twist. It's got the missing wife trope, with some very uncomfortable Native stereotypes, plus some small town politics. It isn't good, but it's a comfy sort of camp - like a particularly bad X-Files episode.

But then Peretti heaps a steaming pile of anti-science crap onto the story and awkwardly shoves in a bunch of creationist angst about not being welcome in academic spaces, never once considering that there might be a reason for that beyond "religious discrimination". It's painful and ridiculous and renders offensive what might otherwise have been a terrible, but harmless monster book with Bigfoots. It's a shame.

But, if you're going to read a Frank Peretti book (and I would beg you not to) this is one of the better ones. It's anti-science and vitriolic, but the actual story is kinda fun in a super campy, horribly written way.
