Squashed is a simple little story about a girl who loves growing. It's definitely targeted towards a younger audience, but holds up for an older audience. It holds great messages about motivation and determination and success. Through the whole book I wanted to see if she would win or not and it kept me guessing till the end. It was quite compelling for such a simple story, and the characters are great. Max, the pumpkin, is definitely a character in his own right and I felt as a reader that I got to know him just as much as I got to know Ellie. It wasn't the greatest book ever, but it was quirky and fun to read with a deceptively deep roots and messages. I would definitely give this to junior high students, possibly younger, but older audiences can still enjoy.
