Magic Slays
by Ilona Andrews
The latest addition to the Kate Daniels series, Magic Slays is by far the funniest. The added humor really improved my impression of the relationships, especially Kate and Andrea. I don't mean that the book is full of slapstick slipping-on-banana-peel humor, but the kind of comfortable joking between friends that is missing in the earlier books.
This book could have been longer. Towards the end of the book, they are either hanging out cooking each other meals and trying on formal wear, or they're racing around frantically killing things after mobilizing a ginormous army. It went back and forth too much for my comfort. By the time of the big battle, I couldn't get worked up anymore. There were also several new groups that would have benefited from a more thorough introduction.
On the upside, the Ilona Andrews writing team managed to add new depth to their world, give us interesting new characters, concoct a new doomsday scenario, as well as set up further story-lines for future books. I'm happy.
