Rip it Up and Start Again
by Simon Reynolds
This is a wonderful book if you're at all interested in popular cultural history. I started reading it the day before I went to see PiL in concert, and it gave me a great insight into a band I already loved. I think Reynolds achieves a great balance between facts and his own opinion, and includes a good amount of social/political/cultural contextualisation where it's most relevant.
Although I skipped a couple of chapters where I wasn't yet familiar with the music, I will go back to them when I've had a chance to listen to it. I also recommend the book in combination with the Spotify playlist below (thanks philgyford!)
