The Carnivorous Carnival
by Lemony Snicket
The great thing at this point in the series is that as the Baudelaire orphans progress toward learning about the fate of their parents and the truth of V.F.D., they're forced to do things they've never considered before. They aren't bad people, but they've gone through a lot of bad things, and now they have to do some bad things as well. It's fascinating to watch them develop and I especially love the cliffhanger at the end of this book... The Baudelaires are totally alone in the middle of nowhere and that's genuinely terrifying.
