I love cozy fiction. I am fully here for a little book to just be about the lives and small interactions between characters. Throw in a fun sci-fi premise and I'm even more excited. After all, this is what the author did in her Monk and Robot series, the first of which was one of my favorite reads of the previous year and one that I still think about regularly.
...but this one? I'm just not sure. Maybe it works better in a novella than a proper length novel, because there's only so long you can read about a (diverse--in every way) cast of characters, all of which have pretty much the same (lovely!) personality go about being rather kind and understanding and supportive of everyone around them without beginning to long for some kind of narrative tension. If this one was novella-length, an optimistic and cozy little sci-fi, I feel like I'd rate it higher.
I'm not done with the series but I'm not jumping in to the next one either. We'll give it another go.
