Stoner by John Williams
5.0

10/10 : I don’t make a habit of beginning my own review with someone else’s, but in this case, I’m struggling to find the words to adequately & eloquently describe this fine novel, so I’ll borrow from Tom Hanks’ review in Time magazine: “It’s simply a novel about a guy who goes to college and becomes a teacher. But it’s one of the most fascinating things that you’ve ever come across”. Originally published in 1973, this book is timeless, so delicately & precisely does Williams write of emotion, of the simple act of living, that is effortlessly transcends Stoners perhaps unremarkable life. Stoner is unequivocally sad, pure, & true, with a depth that is a true literary accomplishment. I’m humbled to have found the time to fully immerse myself in this beautiful book.
