REREAD

This is one of those that was actually better than I remembered- the only major overstep I think it had was
having Arthur Badcock be Marina's first husband
, but otherwise everything was much more neatly plotted than I'd remembered. I'm actually a bit disappointed we didn't get the Baker family as recurring Marple characters- I wonder if Christie intended it but changed her mind? But I liked them better than I'd expected.

It's interesting, now that I'm a bit more familiar with old Hollywood than I was when I first read this, how much more it feels like Christie didn't just mine that Gene Tierney story for plot but also other real life Hollywood stories- I'm sure Jane Russell wasn't the only person to adopt a child whose parents offered them up to raise for better opportunities, but that definitely happened, and while that child was from Ireland not the UK it's still a pretty striking coincidence. I haven't read anything about Hollywood actors abandoning their adopted children after having biological ones, but it wouldn't surprise me at all. In retrospect it also seems blaringly obvious that Marina's prior marriage to the playwright is based on Marilyn Monroe's to Arthur Miller. It's an interesting approach that I'm glad Christie only used the once.
